On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi charged that previous Central governments had neglected to develop border regions and islands.

Speaking at a gathering in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, Modi noted that his government has prioritized the development of border regions, islands, and coastal areas.

“The growth of their own political parties was the only priority of governments that stayed at the Center for decades after independence. The prime minister claimed that states that were far away, near borders, or in the middle of the ocean had received no attention.

On Tuesday, Modi traveled to Lakshadweep and presided over a review meeting covering various Lakshadweep-related topics.

In the Union Territory, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and set the groundwork for a number of projects valued at ₹1,150 crore.

Among them was the Submarine Optical Fibre Connection (KLI – SOFC) project for the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands. The initiative seeks to address Lakshadweep Island’s poor internet service. In August 2020, during his Independence Day speech, the prime minister made the announcement.

“I promised you (the people of Lakshadweep) that high-speed internet would be available within 1,000 days in 2020. Today marks the official launch of the Kochi-Lakshadweep submarine optical fibre project, which will bring high-speed internet to this area, according to Modi.
