The Mumbai Indians named Hardik Pandya captain for the upcoming season with an eye toward the future on Friday, ending Rohit Sharma’s illustrious tenure as captain. The 30-year-old Hardik Pandya rejoined the Mumbai Indians last month after an incredible two-year stint as captain of the Gujarat Titans, which included one of the most prominent trades in IPL history.

IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya replaces Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians' captain

The Mumbai Indians announced in a statement that “renowned all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take the helm as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, succeeding one of the most successful and loved captains, the illustrious Rohit Sharma.” This marked a significant leadership change for the upcoming 2024 season.

It is currently unclear whether the Indian T20 team will be impacted by the MI leadership transition. Since India’s elimination from the World Cup in Australia in the semi-finals last year, Rohit and Virat Kohli have not represented their country in the T20 format. Since then, Pandya has led India in T20Is when available.

But Rohit is back in the running for the T20 World Cup in June 2024 thanks to his brilliant batting performances and excellent captaincy during the most recent ODI World Cup at home. If Rohit hopes to give himself another chance at the “ultimate prize” IPL title, the upcoming edition could be crucial for him because the national selectors will be closely monitoring his IPL form.
