On Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 20th goal of the year as Al-Nassr overcame a late deficit to defeat Al-Taawoun 4-1, allowing them to stay in touch with Al-Hilal, the top team in the Saudi League.

The second-place team’s fourth straight league win keeps them seven points behind their Riyadh rivals going into the new year. A commanding victory at the home of the fourth-place team, who had triumphed 2-0 in the rematch back in August, marked a perfect way to close out 2023.

Al-Taawoun took the lead in the thirteenth minute, setting up an exciting first half. It was decided that Abdulelah Al-Amri had committed a foul in the vicinity.

Marcelo Brozovic made it seem like they had to wait a long time to get back on equal footing. Although the Croatian does not often score, the wait was worthwhile. Midway through the Al-Taawoun half, Anderson Talisca picked up the ball, played a lovely one-two with Ronaldo, and then slipped the ball through to Brozovic, who timed his run into the area perfectly. The former Inter Milan player fired past Mailson with ease.

After thirty-four minutes, Al-Amri had a chance to redeem himself, but he headed a corner against the bar. But in a matter of moments, Al-Nassr took the lead. Aymeric Laporte headed home Brozovic’s corner with a powerful header, marking another goal from an unlikely source. It was the second league goal scored in Saudi Arabia by the Spanish international defender.
